Nina Joy Gerbaulet was born May 13 or 14, 1896 in Staten Island, New York. She graduated, with honors, from the University of California, Berkeley in 1923 and was an early winner of the Emily Chamberlain Cook prize for poetry. She served with U.S. Naval Aviation in 1915-1917, was a feature writer for the San Francisco Examiner from 1919-1920, was assistant editor for the Overland Monthly from 1923-1924, and was a creative writing teacher. Two volumes of her poetry were published: Seeking for Carcassone (University of California Press, 1923) and Contours (Columbia University Press, 1931). She was married to Harold Spencer Clairmonte in 1932 and began publishing as Glenn Clairmonte. Her books included John Sutter of California (1954) and Calamity Was the Name for Jane (1959). She lived in Downey, California and died in May 1986.
